Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town International Convention Centre
19 - 22 February 2016
Sulger-Buel Lovell is proud to present a group exhibition featuring Isabelle Grobler, Neill Wright, David Lurie (South Africa), Soly Cissé (Senegal) and Paul Sika (Cote d’Ivoire) at Cape Town art fair, 19 -21 February 2016 (booth B3).
The gallery will be showcasing Isabelle Grobler’s sculptural assemblages and paintings. Grobler uses detritus as a point of departure to engage with notions of hierarchies and power relations in a world scattered with economic and socio-political paradoxes. She humanizes obsolete objects by transforming them into characterful, hybrid-machine organisms.
Neill Wright’s bronze sculptures from the 'Legacies of Liberation' series will be exhibited alongside his paintings. Wright's practice, which aims to highlight the absurdities and tragedies of the ‘everyday’, carries the spirit of the contemporary. Wright uses a cool concoction of rebellious, tongue and cheek undertones and popular culture to comment on the complexities of Africa’s socio-political condition.
Soly Cissé's new collage paintings from the 'Le Trait' series, will showcase another element of this prolific artist's practice. These compositions, which discover a place, that is no place, far from reality, express the stages of materialization of Cissé’s thoughts. His untamed strokes and erupting colours from which animated figures, dancing shadows and anthropomorphic creatures emerge, create endless planes of collective narratives.
Paul Sika’s technicolour, cinematic photographs seamlessly weave together mythology and realism. Sulger-Buel Lovell will be presenting Sika’s body of work, At the Heart Me for the first time in South Africa. Each frame pulsates with energy, bringing to life the artist's experiences in Abidjan, and imagined journeys through future Africa.
Cape Town art fair will present the best of both contemporary Pan-African and international art from 19 – 21 February 2016.
